Botox® In Moderation

September 21, 2018

As with most things in life, moderation is usually best. We see this with eating to avoid obesity, drinking, sun exposure to avoid skin cancers, exercise to avoid joint damage, and it applies to Botox® as well. Botox® may be used cosmetically to minimize facial lines and movement. Having some facial movement is usually best and avoid the frozen-l-got-Botox look that we sometimes see on the faces in Hollywood.

How Long Does Botox® Last?

Botox® typically starts working in 1 to 3 days, and lasts up to 3 to 4 months. It is not a permanent treatment. For those who do intense cross-fit training or run marathons, Botox® may not last the full 4 months. It is advised to retreat when you start seeing more movement, but before you achieve full movement. This way, Botox can help minimize lines etching further on your face.

Risks of Botox®, Onabotulinumtoxin A

The effect of Botox® may affect areas away from the injection site and cause weakness in other muscles. Double vision, blurred vision, droopy eyelids, hoarseness or change in your voice have been reported. More serious side effects could be over-all muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing or breathing, more intense vision problems, dizziness, loss of bladder control, dry mouth, or headaches. As with any medication, redness, swelling, and rash could also occur.

Do not use Botox® if you are allergic to any ingredient, have a skin infection or inflammation at the injection site, are pregnant or nursing, on blood thinners or certain medications, or have a muscle disease like myasthenia gravis, ALS, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome. Please discuss all your medications and supplements with Dr, Hiers prior to receiving Botox.

Botox®, a potent substance in nature, has medical and aesthetic benefits. It was first approved for therapeutic use in 1989. The FDA has approved the use of Botox® for minimizing the lines between your eyes, crows feet, and forehead lines.
